It’s not always about price

It’s not always about price

Do you ever find yourself in a supermarket standing in front of a wall of toilet paper scratching your head trying to figure out which one is the best deal? They all appear the same. They all feel squishy. They all say they’re the best. But why is there such a price difference?

How do you make a decision? Maybe you just buy the same paper every time because you know what you’re getting already. Either way, it can be a very frustrating experience. As you stand there scratching your head, you notice a package. You pick it up. Price is good, and it’s got twice the number of sheets. You squeeze it and it feels soft. WINNER! You throw it in the cart and take it home. How bad can 1 ply toilet paper actually be? You feel good about saving $3 and think you may have found the holy grail.

Fast forward a couple of hours and need to use it. This is when you discover that it’s not quite the same as what you’re used to. The 1 ply feels like parchment paper and you end up using 3 times more than your regular 2 ply paper. In this case, you end up spending more than if you would’ve picked your regular brand for $3 more!

Shopping for the right electric bike can be a similar experience. Really?

There are so many brands to choose from. They all appear to be similar and do the same thing. But when you peel back the onion, they are very different. We have found that customers initially look at price as the deciding factor. Unfortunately this can potentially be a BIG mistake! The industry is polluted with ‘discount brands’ that are racing to be the lowest price. Although the low price can be attractive, more often than not, you get what you pay for. Pay a low price, get a low quality product.

But they al look the same! This is true. However, peel back the onion once again and you will discover that there are many different components that go into the final build of an electric bike. An electric bike is even more complex and component rich than a standard bicycle.

What makes a cheap bike, cheap? Many of the discount brands use generic, low-end Chinese components.  These bikes can cheap for a reason. You will end up with a potential safety issue, or constantly repairing components at the very least. It will end up costing you more in the end!

Don’t let price be the only deciding factor. Buying an electric bike is not a small purchase so educate yourself and ask a lot of questions.

We believe in quality at an affordable price. Not always the lowest price.

Alter Ego Electric Bikes is here to answer any questions you might have.

The Best. Period.

VeloVillain 500 VS RadMini

VeloVillain 500 VS RadMini

First point I want to make is that this is NOT A BASH THE OTHER GUYS blog!

People have been asking us to compare our VeloVillain 500 2nd Gen to the Rad Power RadMini, so here it is! Hope you enjoy!

The obvious similarities are:
1) Both are folding electric bikes
2) Both are fat tire bikes
3) Both are good quality electric bikes sold factory direct to the consumer, saving people lots of money! Did I actually admit that the RadMini is a good bike? Yep! But there are many differences between our models. Keep reading.

FRAME DESIGN

Both frames are built with durable 6061 Aircraft Grade Aluminum Alloy. This is a good thing, because it will never rust and is extremely strong. However, VeloVillain 500 comes with a 5 YEAR WARRANTY on the frame against any manufacturer defects. RadMini is 1 year warranty only.

The VeloVillain 500 has a unique design that is specifically engineered for the Pacific Northwest climate in mind. How? Take a close look at the battery and controller location. Where is it? The answer isn't obvious at first glance. The battery and controller is hidden inside the frame, protecting it from rain, sun, debris, etc. Whereas, the RadMini has an exposed battery and controller that will take a direct hit from the elements. This is probably the most significant difference between them.

THE MOTOR:

The VeloVillain 500 comes equipped with a good quality, High Torque 500W BAFANG 8FUN Rear Hub Motor. The RadMini appears to have the exact same motor. The biggest difference here is the 2 year warranty that VeloVillain 500 has. That's double the coverage!

MOTOR WARRANTY:
VeloVillain 500: Up to 2 Years
RadMini: 1 Year

THE BATTERY:

The VeloVillain comes equipped with a SAMSUNG Smart Lithium Ion 48V 8.8AH battery that will get a range of up to 40km using iPAS. The RadMini comes equipped with a PANASONIC Lithium Ion 48V 11.6Ah battery with an estimated range of up to 60km using iPAS. I haven't tested the RadMini for how accurate the range is, but I'd expect 60km is an absolute best case using the lowest iPAS setting and traveling on level ground without a wind. I can tell you that our range is not estimated and will get up to 40km in the real world. Bottom line is, both batteries are good and the comparison here is negligible. But what good is a battery if it gets water damage?

BATTERY WARRANTY:
VeloVillain 500: Up to 2 Years
RadMini: 1 Year

THE DISPLAY & CONTROLS

The VeloVillain comes equipped with a full color HD-LCD Display and a slew of customized settings and a USB port to charge your SmartPhone. Unfortunately, RadMini cheaped out on this component and equipped theirs with a monochromatic LCD display with limited functionality. VeloVillain 500 has integrated headlight and electronic horn controls on the right handlebar making it more of a motorbike-like feel. No horn on the RadMini.

THE iPAS & THROTTLE

Both bikes come with Intelligent Pedal Assist and Half-Twist Throttle providing options for the rider. However, the VeloVillain 500 has 9-Level iPAS, whereas the RadMini has 5-Level iPAS.

THE OTHER COMPONENTS

Almost all other components are the same between the two models, so there's not much point in comparing them. Right from the Shimano MF-TZ21 derailleur; to the Tektro 180mm Mechanical Disc Brakes; to the heavy duty aluminum kick stand.

THE COMPANY

Alter Ego Electric Bikes is 100% CANADIAN and proud of it! Rad Power Bikes is an American company. Either way, it doesn't affect the quality of the bike as they are all manufactured in Asia anyways. This is not a bad thing. In fact, if our bikes were manufactured in Canada, or the USA for that matter, the pricing would be 3-4 times higher for the same product. The difference is in the components. Both of our companies choose to use high quality, brand name components that will last for years to come. So if our bikes were manufactured in Canada, they'd still have the exact same components. The same thing can not be said about some of the 'discount brands' that only use generic components just so they can race to the bottom on price. You don't want anything to do with those bikes!

THE PRICE

Ok, this is where we are alightly different. VeloVillain has a website price of $1899CAD, whereas RadMini is currently priced at $1999CAD. Both of us have deals if you buy 2 or more (currently $100 discount per bike). Great value for either bike to be completely honest. It may just come down to your personal preference on the design at the end of the day OR whether not you want to support local Canadian business or send your money to the USA. That's for you to decide.

Alter Ego Electric Bikes has flexible financing term available up to 60 months or take advantage of 0% interest for up to 18 months! Click for details.

THE CONCLUSION

The point of this blog was to highlight some of the differences between two really good bikes that tend to compete with one another. You won't go wrong with either bike, but I sure hope you buy our VeloVillain 500! At least give it a try!

Myth Busters

Myth Busters

As personal electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, we find that some myths and misconceptions come to light. In this post, we will discuss some of them.

ELECTRIC BIKES ARE FOR LAZY PEOPLE:

Unless you are using the bicycle to train for a competition, the is definitely not true! Electric bikes and e-kick scooters actually encourage people to get out more often, and go further than a traditional bicycle. A good deal of our customers would have never considered cycling had it not been for the assistance of the motor.

We find that most of our customers use their Alter Ego Electric Bike as a commuter vehicle to get to and from work. This is a fantastic use of the ev as they don't become exhausted or show up to work sweaty.

YOU NEED A DRIVERS LICENSE TO USE AN ELECTRIC BIKE:

Even though our bikes contain a battery and a motor, the speed limit is restricted to 32km/hr. This means it is still be classified as a regular bicycle and no drivers license is required.

YOU CAN'T GO VERY FAR:

How far would you ride on a traditional bicycle before calling it a day? 5km? 10km? 20km... maybe? Alter Ego Electric Bikes range from a minimum of 20km using only the throttle and go up to 60km when using our iPAS (Intelligent Pedal Assist) mode. Extra batteries = even further distance! Did I mention, you don't even have to work up a sweat?

E-BIKES ARE EXPENSIVE:

Compared to what? If you're comparing an electric bike with a bike from Walmart, they will seem on the pricy side of things. If you've shopped around at a specialty bike shop, you'll see that our pricing is similar to a traditional bicycle and sometimes even less. Alter Ego Bikes uses name brand components (Samsung, Shimano, Panasonic, Tektro, Zoom, etc), so you can rest easy knowing you are buying a quality electric bike.

Owning an Alter Ego Electric Bike will also save you money as you won't need to pay for parking, gas, bus pass, gym membership, etc. You also won't get frustrated in traffic jams!

Our simple Financing program makes owning an Alter Ego even more affordable with payments as low as $32/month. We even offer NO INTEREST + NO PAYMENTS FOR 6 MONTHS (oac).

ELECTRIC BIKES AREN'T STREET LEGAL:

Of course they are! They can legally go anywhere a traditional bicycle can go. Bike paths, streets, biking trails, and even sidewalks in some cities. You won't find a more versatile electric vehicle!

ELECTRIC BIKES ARE NOISY:

Not at all! In fact, you can barely hear the motor. It is an integrated and virtually silent electrical system made up of a motor, battery, and controller. A gentle hum is all you will hear.

ELECTRIC BIKES ARE FUN:

This is 100% true! Arrange a TEST RIDE to see for yourself! But be warned, once you try one, you'll want one, or maybe 2! #rideitloveit

HOW DO WE KEEP OUR PRICES SO LOW?

HOW DO WE KEEP OUR PRICES SO LOW?

This is a question that we get often. Many people think our pricing is too good to be true.

It's simple economics, really. Our business model from the very start was to manufacturer a quality product that EVERYONE can afford. We are able to do this by removing the middle man... the Dealer. Without having a Dealer network, we are able to sell to YOU direct! The profit stays in YOUR pocket where it belongs!

Our product compares to any premium brand on the market today!! We dare you to compare. Shop around, then take ours for a spin. You will agree!!

We sell factory direct to you!

First Impressions

First order of business was to take inventory of each and every Ultrabike, then of all the accessories. This took quite a while and we were getting impatient. I wanted to ride one! We finally fully assembled 1, which happened to be the UTE+! YES!! This is a very substantial bike at first glance. Very well built and solid components.

I got on and started pedalling like I would on a normal bicycle. WOW! The motor kicked in and gave me an unexpected push. I knew what to expect being an electric bicycle, but the kick still surprised me. I love it!

After spending a full weekend with our Ultrabikes, we can't see cycling any other way! We took them with us everywhere over the weekend and people were stopping us to ask what kind of bike we were riding even though we were riding around in the middle of a late summer windstorm. After giving them the opportunity to ride it for themselves, they found themselves in awe. They had no idea what to expect and were impressed. Here are some actual quotes:

'Did I just do that myself' when referring to the motor as it kicked in.

'Do I have to give this back to you?'

'Holy S#%*. This is crazy! I want one!'

'What the heck just happened?'

I can't wait to get onto the streets of Vancouver to get YOUR first impressions. We truly have an amazing product. We can't wait to share it with you.

If you want to book a ride, please text me directly at 604-615-4261. I will do my best to accommodate your request and meet you anywhere within the Lower Mainland.

If you're in the Puget Sound area of Washington, we can meet you as well with a little notice.

Hope you all had a great weekend even though the weather was quite nasty!

Still nothing.....

Our Ultrabikes are still in the hands of Canada Customs. Reason? Because our plant overseas forgot to affix the required Transport Canada label to the frame. Here is what should be affixed to each frame:

Unfortunately, such a small issue puts a halt on delivery. It seems crazy to me that they would reject admittance for such a silly label. But it is life and we will have to move on from this and hope that we can come to a resolution and take delivery as soon as possible.
